The 13th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Cellular Therapy took place on June 24-27, 2007 in Sydney, Australia. Its plenary sessions included reports on recent achievements in cellular and gene therapy. Physicians from Australia, Italy, Germany, USA and Japan maintain leadership in this area. Chief Director of the Center of Cell and Gene Therapy, Stem Cell Bank «Pokrovski» Alexander Smolyaninov, Research Director of the Center of Cell and Gene Therapy, Stem Cell Bank «Pokrovski» Irina Palona and Chief Director of the Samara Public Cord Blood Bank O.V. Tyumina took part in the meeting.
Great attention was paid to the works related to collection, processing and use of cord blood. Research works related to the use of cord blood stem cells in the treatment of patients with hematological diseases, spinal injury, cerebrovascular disease, liver diseases and tuberculosis were of special interest. A new strategy of the use of cord blood stem cells in the treatment of different diseases has been developed at the meeting.
Many works were dedicated to investigation and practical use of mesenchymal stem cells. They can be used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, critical limb ischemia. Autologous mesenchymal cells have recently been widely introduced into the treatment of spinal injuries. Mesenchymal stem cells have also been used in the treatment of cancer patients.
A number of works were dedicated to the use of G-CSF mobilizing cytokine in the treatment of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, and diseases of joints.
An exhibition of technical equipment for work with the cells and genes was organized in the framework of the 13th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Cellular Therapy. Equipment for stem cell extraction from the cord blood, bone marrow and peripheral blood manufactured by BIOSAFE Sepax (Switzerland) deserved special attention. The machine for stem cell culturing in automatic mode manufactured by BIOTRON (South Korea) was also of interest. It has been tested by the company on NASA spaceships where characteristics of bone marrow and cord blood mesenchymal stem cells grown in weightlessness conditions were studied.
Dr. Med. Sci. Alexander Smolyaninov conducted meetings with professors J. Rasko (USA), E. Horwitz (USA), D. Losordo (USA), W. Li (USA), J. Lee (USA), Iu. Djonovoi (Switzerland), K. Rhee (South Korea), J. Barret (USA), ect.
